One woman dead in mass shooting on Chicago's West Side 02:31

CHICAGO (CBS) – One woman was killed, and four other women were hurt in a mass shooting in Chicago's Austin neighborhood early Sunday morning.

The shooting happened inside Poppy's Chat Room in the 5300 block of West Madison Street just after 1 a.m. Chicago police said a group of people were inside the business when an unknown person fired multiple shots at them before fleeing the scene.

It was a violent start to the Easter holiday, and neighbors say they are tired of seeing blood in the streets.

A 19-year-old woman was shot in the head and was pronounced dead on the scene. A 20-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to her left leg and a graze wound to the face. She was taken to Rush University Medical Center in good condition. Another 19-year-old woman was shot in her left ankle and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in good condition. A 17-year-old girl was shot in her right leg and was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.  A 16-year-old girl suffered a gunshot wound to her right toe and was taken to Stroger in good condition.

On this Resurrection Sunday, a community activist and a concerned citizen are calling for a change.

"You look around, and there's blood stains. Nobody bothered to clean up the blood," said neighbor Marshawn Felton. "Imagine the people that didn't see the news or didn't hear this story, and they're just walking past. What kind of trauma does that invoke to come past and see this amount of blood just freely resting there?"

Austin resident Shawn Childs with the House of Hope Foundation decided to clean up the blood himself.

"When I found out that it was everybody 20 and under, I said, 'Here we go again,'" he said.

Childs said he got an alert on his phone about the shooting. He was distraught, and so was his daughter.

"I saw my daughter's face, and my daughter came out and said, 'Daddy, my friend was killed last night,'" he said.

Childs and Felton didn't even know each other until Sunday. They're now bonded under unfortunate circumstances.

"Now we're going to connect, and we're going to figure out strategies on how we can help kids and bring kids together," Childs said.

It is unclear what led to the shooting.

No arrests were made. Area 4 detectives were investigating.

CBS 2 also reached out to the business owner but has not heard back yet.
