Irish immigrant laborers helped carve a railroad route through solid granite more than 175 years ago. Sagamore Bridge plan adds two bike, pedestrian railroad crossings
Two new railroad crossings are planned on the south side of the Cape Cod Canal to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety as part of the new $2.1 billion Sagamore Bridge construction plans . The state will hold a hearing on the proposal on Wednesday, Nov. 4, in Bourne. Along the canal's south side is a 6 1/2-mile paved service road that is also a bicycle and walking trail . Parallel to the service road are railroad tracks, and south of the tracks are neighborhoods and main roadways. Currently, pedestrians and bicyclists cross the railroad tracks at informal or unauthorized locations that lack appropriate safety protections, according to the state Department of Transportation. The hearing will be held with MassDOT staff and the Barnstable County Board of Regional Commissioners. MassDOT requested the hearing so the county board can determine whether the proposed crossings “should be required as public necessity and convenience,” according to the county notice. Boston Residents Fume As Mayor Wu Fails to Deliver Promised Traffic-Calming to Neighborhood Streets

This decision has caused an incredible amount of internal conflict for me, I don't think it's the right choice."
