NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Baseball season is officially underway and a New Haven high school is celebrating its newly upgraded field.

State leaders, athletes and coaches gathered at Wilbur Cross High School’s new and renovated baseball field on Monday. The improvements to Rice Field include rebuilt dugouts, fencing and bullpens and a new batting cage.

“We believe in New Haven that they deserve all the resources we could give them and that’s what today is truly about,” said New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker. “Hopefully this motivates kids to play baseball, play sports and everything else.”

The renovations were part of a $500,000 project on Rice Field. The second phase of upgrades will begin later this season including new bleachers and electrical system repairs.
