Habitat for Humanity project offers home ownership opportunity to Samaritan employees
By the end of 2027, income-qualified Samaritan Health Services employees will have increased home ownership opportunities, thanks to a unique partnership between the health system and Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln County, according to a release from Samaritan Health Services. Once the project is complete, nine Lincoln City homes will be available for purchase by Samaritan employees, with up to three of the homes available for purchase by survivors of the 2020 Echo Mountain wildfire. “We have long recognized that finding affordable homes is difficult for many of our employees and even more so for those with the lowest incomes,” said Lesley Ogden, MD, CEO of Samaritan’s coast hospitals. “For many years, Samaritan has owned a piece of vacant land near our Lincoln City hospital and we wanted to leverage it to its best use. Partnering with Habitat for Humanity seems like a perfect fit.” Marking the project’s official launch, the land transfer of 1.13 acres valued at $500,000 was legally recorded with the county in early January. The property is located at 2655 NE Lake Drive, which is zoned for multifamily residential use. “We’re incredibly excited to partner with Samaritan Health to provide affordable homeownership opportunities for our health

Bye-bye, brewery. New tenant planned for Elk Horn Brewery building
The Elk Horn Brewery at the corner of Hilyard Street and Broadway has been vacant since the restaurant and brewery closed in fall 2024 after serving patrons for a decade. The brewpub served burgers and sandwiches with beers on tap. Changes are planned for the building situated along a busy street corner full of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The space will retain its use as an eatery, but an incoming tenant is looking to switch up the offerings formerly provided from burgers and beers to another beloved food option. Here’s what to know about changes to the old Elk Horn Brewery building. What’s happening to the former Elk Horn Brewery on Broadway? The former brewery and restaurant building has been unoccupied since Elk Horn’s closure, but it may not be empty for much longer. Building permits and preliminary planning documents obtained by The Register-Guard indicate plans for a tenant change at the restaurant, located at 686 E. Broadway. Permits show the building will retain its restaurant use with a new tenant: Domino’s Pizza. The building has to undergo some changes for Domino’s before the space will be ready for use again. The basement floor will be transformed into office spaces.

What’s next for this former market?
Every spring drivers going north over the Willamette River in Albany get to admire, if only briefly, a row of trees with beautiful blossoms. The trees light up what is an otherwise depressing sight: the empty building that housed a thriving market back in the day, and then a couple of garden centers.
