That would include a preseason scrimmage Darlington played on Halloween afternoon at Van Es Arena against a solid south Georgia name on the hardwood, Tift County High. The Tigers won 61-56 giving the home crowd an advanced look at what Darlington plans to show several others all the way to March. “That’s in the past. That’s history,” said West about Darlington’s first-ever state championship win in boys basketball — 53-50 over Holy Innocents’ at the Macon Coliseum — to end the Tigers’ season at 30-2. “It’s a new year. We have a new group. We have guys playing different roles. We have to put the history behind us and get focused on this year. Barron Stadium facing potential $325,000 video board replacement
Barron Stadium could be facing a $325,000 expense to replace its aging video board, prompting officials to ask the city of Rome to consider the project in future budget discussions. During a recent General Administration Committee meeting, Rome City Schools Assistant Superintendent Dennis Drummond told commissioners the video board at the city-owned stadium, installed in August 2018, is showing its age after more than eight years of operation. "It's nearing the end of its life," Drummond said. The 36-by-20-foot video screen, which features an integrated scoreboard, was installed ahead of the 2018 football season for $249,000. The project was funded through a 2017 city special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST). Drummond said officials obtained a quote at the end of June estimating the cost of updating the video board at $325,000. He explained that the equipment operates around the clock, contributing to its wear over time. While the original video board was funded through SPLOST, City Finance Director Toni Rhinehart said there are no remaining SPLOST funds specifically set aside for improvements at Barron Stadium. Although the stadium has several other infrastructure needs, Drummond identified the video board as the most immediate concern. Other improvements that could be needed
