Rome pulls away from Pope in the second half
(Editor’s note: According to AJC.com, Douglas County High made no further appeals to the Georgia High School Association’s ruling on two ineligible players, meaning the Tigers must forfeit three football wins in September, GHSA executive director Tim Scott confirmed Thursday. That includes a win over Rome High School Sept. 25, and so the Wolves’ season record is now 3-6). As Pope took the field for their final regular-season game at Greyhound Stadium, 47 seniors were hoping to make the occasion a special one. Ultimately, the Greyhounds weren’t able to overcome an injury to starting quarterback Hudson Marinko, falling 35-7 to Rome in their penultimate Region 6-6A game. Two touchdowns for Rome in the first three plays from scrimmage put Pope on the back foot early, and after Marinko’s injury nearing the end of the first half, the Wolves’ defense dominated down the stretch, as Pope had just 10 rushing yards for the game. Heading into the night, both teams likely needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive under the new PSR system. Wolves prove worthy of ranking with home split
Some people may have wondered just how good Rome High’s second-year flag football team really was this season. There’s not much reason to doubt anymore. Hosting a pair of state-ranked teams Thursday at Barron Stadium in their biggest test of the year, the Wolves ended up with a split after beating Sequoyah 19-7 in the opener before dropping a narrow 7-0 game to Pope in the nightcap. In the middle game, Pope got by Sequoyah 19-7. Both Pope and Rome were ranked in various media polls this week, and Sequoyah, Pope and Rome were all tied atop the Area 6 standings at 2-0 entering the night. In the GHSA postseason power rankings, Pope was rated No. 6 in Division 4, while Rome was eighth and Sequoyah was ninth. Rome head coach Jared Hughes said this was a good litmus test to see how his team would match up against some of the elite programs in Division 4. “I think the state knows who we are now. I think there were some question marks about our program, being just a second-year team, and even though the second game tonight didn’t turn out the way we had hoped, we know we belong
