Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene with SWAT-style trucks and engaged the armed individual outside the middle school building.

A witness told PBS Wisconsin she heard gunshots and saw children fleeing the school Wednesday morning.

Officials with the Mount Horeb Area School District posted situational updates on Facebook starting at 11:30 a.m. CDT and said only the shooter was harmed.

No description of the alleged shooter or the person's condition were announced.

The district's Facebook page was not working Wednesday afternoon.

The school and its students were on lockdown by noon, and a search of the middle school didn't find any other suspects, school officials said.

Armed officers continued patrolling the school grounds Wednesday afternoon.

Law enforcement units responding to the scene included the Dane County Sheriff's Department, the Mount Horeb Police Department and the Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms.

Mount Horeb is located about 20 miles west of Madison and had a population of 7,754 in 2020, according to the U.S. Census.
