Battlefield Memorial Gateway Groundbreaking in Plattsburgh
This week the Town of Plattsburgh and veterans’ groups break ground on a multi-million-dollar veterans memorial on the shore of Lake Champlain. After 6 years and delays due to the pandemic, the official groundbreaking for the Battlefield Memorial Gateway was held Memorial Day weekend in Plattsburgh. The first phase of construction is underway, there will be 6 in all, and the plans include overlooks of Lake Champlain, an outdoor amphitheater, a Purple Heart hiking trail dedicated to veterans, and the centerpiece of the project will be a memorial honoring veterans. At the docks, near-by on Lake Champlain, there will be easier access to the monuments and burial grounds on Crab Island. The Battlefield Memorial Gateway will cost about 6-million-dollars to build, and plans are to have all 6 phases completed in time for the nation’s 250th commemoration in 2026.

A new book tells the inspiring story of Holocaust Survivor Vladimir Munk, who courageously returned to the world’s most notorious concentration camp at Auschwitz, where his parents and many of his relatives were murdered. Just before the outbreak of the global pandemic, Vladimir Munk, a retired SUNY Plattsburgh professor joined more than 100 other survivors for a memorial marking the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi Death Camp. Munk traveled to Poland with Julie Canepa, a writer who lives in Plattsburgh, and two filmmakers, Paul Frederick and Bruce Carlin, who produced a documentary on his trip back to Auschwitz that is now being broadcast on PBS stations nationwide and will be rebroadcast here on Mountain Lake PBS on Tuesday, June 6th at 8pm.
