Pertinacious Coffee is opening a cafe near Park Road Shopping Center

Pertinacious, a local speciality coffee brand that started with a mobile cart, is opening its first standalone shop in Montford. Why it matters: The expansion marks a major milestone for 23-year-old founder Emma Layman, who has built a loyal following by sharing the behind-the-scenes reality of running her small business on social media. Driving the news: Pertinacious is aiming to open in mid-January 2027 inside Centro Montford, a new apartment development near Park Road Shopping Center. A rendering of what the Montford Cafe will look like (it's currently under construction). Rendering: Courtesy of Emma Layman Catch up quick: Layman started Pertinacious with a coffee cart in 2024 and later expanded to The Club , a fitness and coworking space in South End. She told Axios in September that monthly sales had grown from $8,363 to $29,156 in one year. Pertinacious will continue operating its cafe inside The Club after the Montford storefront opens. What to expect: The roughly 700-square-foot shop will have a handful of indoor tables and an outdoor patio. The menu will feature all the specialty coffees customers already love, including the blueberry vanilla latte, which Layman says has sold more than 6,000. The new cafe will also

Did a Charlotte nightclub really charge $6 for a to-go box? Here's what we know

A to-go box fee listed on a Charlotte nightclub receipt has sparked a viral debate about how much is too much to pay for a meal out. An Instagram user who goes by the name Her Soles reposted a photo of a receipt from STATS Charlotte , which included a $28 dollar charge for Cajun chicken alfredo – and a $6 charge for a to-go box. It also included $1.02 service fee and 15% gratuity, bringing the total bill to $43.27. “$43 for some Alfredo by itself?????” the caption reads. “$12.12 extra for gratuity, a to-go box and a service fee is crazy! I would have told them to keep it. I’ll eat somewhere else.” More than 700 people responded — and many agreed with the original poster — with several commenters saying they would have left the club rather than paying the fees. “$6 for a to-go box is criminal,” Ashley Boulos commented. “Imma stuff the alfredo in my pocket just to prove a point.” “The way I would’ve walked out with the plate and silverware, the glass too,” a user named Nelle wrote. But not everyone sided with the majority. “OK, I hear y’all but STATS food is

Unpaid rent dispute between Charlotte stars Cam Newton and Lamelo Ball is over

An unpaid rent dispute between Carolina Panthers star Cam Newton’s company, Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball and Ball’s manager has reached an end, according to court documents. A lawsuit alleging Ball and his manager owed the former Panthers quarterback’s company more than $270,000 for 11 months of unpaid rent and other HOA fees was appealed to federal court in September and dismissed altogether last week. What exactly led to the joint dismissal, however, remains unknown. Attorneys on both sides did not respond to emails and calls from The Charlotte Observer. The at-times muddy saga has seen an eviction , contradictory claims and both local and federal courts over the last seven months. It all stems from a 2020 lease for Newton’s old Charlotte condos, which sit above an uptown Brazilian steakhouse and between the Spectrum Center and Bank of America stadium. In 2020, Newton had moved away from the city after helping the Panthers get to the 2016 Super Bowl . Ball was just beginning his five-year stint as the Hornets point guard, during which he would become the highest-paid athlete in Charlotte. Ball set sights on Newton’s condo, which was managed by a business owned by Newton and his
