Traffic to shift to new lanes on N.C. 211 in Hoke County

A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation will shift traffic along a portion of N.C. 211 in Hoke County onto newly constructed lanes starting next week. Beginning at 8 a.m. on Nov. 10, weather permitting, crews will begin shifting traffic in both directions on N.C. 211 from approximately 1 mile east of Ashemont Road to Ivey Street onto the newly constructed lanes. The traffic shift is expected to be fully completed by 4 p.m.

Aberdeen Carolina and Western Wins a $19.9 Million Grant

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway said on October 28 that it has been awarded a $19.9 million federal grant through the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements program. The project replaces rail laid in the early to mid 1900s with about 30 miles of continuous welded rail in Montgomery and Stanly counties. The grant supports a total investment of $41 million. The railroad and the North Carolina Department of Transportation will contribute 52 percent as the non-federal match.

Fayetteville ranks high in NC for crashes, pedestrian deaths

Fayetteville and Cumberland County rank among North Carolina’s cities and counties with the highest numbers of crashes, traffic fatalities and pedestrian deaths, according to a recently released report from the state Division of Motor Vehicles. The report analyzed 2025 crash data in 579 North Carolina municipalities and 100 counties. Fayetteville ranked third among North Carolina cities in pedestrian fatalities, tied for fifth in total traffic deaths, sixth in injury crashes and seventh in total crashes. According to an analysis of the report by the North Carolina Alliance for Safe Transportation, traffic fatalities statewide fell 12% in 2025, with 1,524 people killed in crashes, compared with 1,732 in 2024. “These statistics are more than numbers — they reflect lives lost and families forever changed,” state DMV Commissioner Paul Tine wrote in the annual report. The report found that speed was a factor in 22% of the fatalities while alcohol was involved in 23.6%. Among people killed in vehicles equipped with seat belts, 44% were not wearing one. Meanwhile, distraction was self-reported in 16% of all the crashes, and “may not reflect the severity of this issue," the report states. “We know how to avoid most crashes,” NCAST Executive Director Joe Stewart

If you get a speeding ticket in NC, be prepared for years of expensive insurance

You might think of getting a speeding ticket as a one-off. It sucks, but it doesn’t define you as a driver. Unfortunately, that forgiveness may not be reflected in your car insurance bills. According to a new study from LendingTree, in North Carolina, average auto insurance premiums rise 49.3% after a ticket for driving 11-15 mph over the speed limit. The study analyzed insurance rate data from Quadrant Information Services, comparing rates before and after a driver’s first speeding ticket for driving 11-15 mph over the limit. In North Carolina, premiums went up, on average, from $1,173 to $1,752 annually. That’s $579 more per year, or an increase of about $48 per month. And those higher rates could stick around. Aubie Knight, CEO of the Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina , told me that insurance surcharges usually remain for three years. If a 49.3% increase seems steep, it is. The LendingTree study found that North Carolina’s percentage rate increase is the highest among all 50 states and Washington, D.C., followed by California (41.8%), Michigan (36.5%), Rhode Island (36.4%) and Delaware (31.3%).
