Next time you go hiking in Bucks County, be sure to pack a hammer and don’t be alarmed if you hear eerie sounds coming from deep inside the woods. No, these noises are not made by humans, animals, or even the movement of trees, but rather by a group of stationary boulders that emit a […]
Movie scenes can make a staircase, a diner, or a quiet cemetery feel unforgettable, turning ordinary places into settings that stay with audiences long after the credits roll. Across Pennsylvania, real locations have helped bring stories to life, from tales of brave fighters and young friendships to encounters with strange creatures and dangerous secrets. Exploring these places in person offers a different perspective than watching them on screen.
He’s a rarity, that’s for sure. A guy who’s equally at ease while preaching from the Bible in a church or delivering a punch line at a comedy club. That’s right, State College’s Jonathan Weibel is both an ordained pastor and a professional stand-up comedian. Appropriately enough, he jokes about his curious combination of professions. “I fly a lot,” says the clergy comic, “and one of the first things someone says to you on a plane is, ‘What do you do for a living?’ If I want to talk to them, I tell them I’m a stand-up comedian. And if I’m tired and don’t want to talk to them, I’ll tell them I’m a Baptist evangelist.” Weibel has served in Christian ministry for nearly 40 years. The last 30 years have been spent in the Centre Region, where he’s planted three new churches and served as lead pastor, worship pastor or youth pastor at State College Alliance Church, Penns Valley Community Church and Centre Church. He first got my attention in work that was unrelated to stand-up: serving as the director of Front Yard Mission , a movement designed to bring genuine Christian love to neighborhoods. But then I heard
A chest beneath one altar holds 84 relics of saints and martyrs, including Saint Patrick. That detail alone made me stop scrolling. Construction began in 1875, and the cathedral was dedicated in 1893. The bishop behind it refused to build unless the money was already in hand, so the walls rose slowly, stone by red stone.

The winners in local political races impact the lives of citizens every minute of every day. From governors, state senators and representatives; county legislators, school boards, borough council members and township supervisors, historically poor voter turnout in election cycle “off years” – or in those where a president is not running for election – can have a profound impact on education funding, programs, property taxes, policies, services and more.
Montgomery County hides remarkable distinctions in plain sight. A Quaker meetinghouse begun around 1695 still hosts weekly worship in Lower Merion. A Main Line shopping center once held the Guinness title for the world’s first. And Elkins Park is home to a building type Frank Lloyd Wright designed nowhere else.
Their ranks are thinning, and they might be a little rounder around the middle from the times in which their youths were “touched with fire,” but their patriotic ardor hasn’t faded, and they will be stepping off at the annual Lycoming County Veterans Day Parade this Saturday, November 7, in Hughesville at 2 p.m. or 1400 hours, military time.

A Pennsylvania man has officially taken his love of movies to a whole new level. 60-year-old Glenwood Hoskin Jr. watched 1,207 movies in theaters over the course of ONE YEAR, averaging more than three movies a day to snag a Guinness World Record. He planned his days around theater showtimes, sometimes watching movies from early morning until midnight. His favorites included animated films and comedies, and he even got help from theater employees figuring out which movies were shortest so he could squeeze in more screenings. The best part? He kept the whole thing relatively affordable with a Regal Unlimited subscription that costs around $28 a month.
