Here's why Minneapolis' historic Stone Arch Bridge is closed

A partial closure of Minneapolis' historic Stone Arch Bridge begins Monday morning.

Why it matters: Walkers, runners and bicyclists won't be able to fully cross popular landmark for over a year.

What to expect: The work is starting on the St. Anthony Main side of the bridge

    • People can still walk from the Mill District side, closer to downtown, but they'll have to turn around at the halfway point.

Zoom in: The $38.5 million project involves repairing and replacing stone and mortar on the 141-year-old bridge to slow deterioration and improve its overall condition, per the Minnesota Department of Transportation .

What's next: Work on the St. Anthony Main portion is expected to wrap up in spring 2025. At that time, the other half will close for repair.

    • A MnDOT spokesperson told Axios that people should be able to cross the bridge again by fall of 2025.
    • The full project could be complete by spring of 2026.

If you (need to) go (around): MnDOT has several recommended detours for getting across the Mississippi by foot or bike.
