‘Autistic Child In Area’ Signs Could Save A Life

In the summer of 2024, a nightmare came to life when my daughter, Soa, was almost knocked down by a car traveling down Beach 96th Street. Thankfully, the driver, an elderly man, was not speeding, and by God’s grace, he came to a screeching halt, and just lightly tapped my daughter’s thigh. My daughter got up and continued to skip across the street with me chasing her. The man started shouting: “What’s wrong with you! Watch where you are going!” With my heart pounding out of my chest, eyes welling up with tears—I explained to him that she is autistic and nonverbal. His demeanor immediately softened, and he apologized. He even shared that he has friends with autistic children. This is why after seeing, “Autistic Child In The Area,” signs in Lynbrook, Long Island and other neighborhoods in Nassau and Suffolk counties, I immediately probed the idea of getting these signs installed in Rockaway and Broad Channel. I contacted Ciara Donley of Councilwoman Joann Ariola’s office, and without skipping a beat, the councilwoman developed a bill, “Intro 46,” that would let parents of autistic children request road signs from the city to let motorists know that autistic children live in a neighborhood. However, to my utter consternation, at a City Council hearing held last Tuesday, October 27, Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Mike Flynn, referred to these potentially lifesaving signs as “clutter” that would come at a financial cost to the city. As Councilwoman Ariola shared in a statement on Facebook: “What is the cost of saving the life of a child? Does a young life also have a price tag, Commissioner? This is completely unacceptable. Do better, DOT.” To hear Commissioner Flynn’s remarks, visit: Joann Ariola NYC Council District 32 on Facebook or https://x.com/JoannAriola32/status/2115092282978251028.

NY suburbs’ last GOP strongholds flip as blue wave makes history on Long Island, Westchester

The tidal wave keeps rolling. Long Island’s Republican stronghold Hempstead shockingly flipped blue under the weight of the Democratic blue wave in Tuesday’s midterms — as the northern suburbs of Westchester and Rockland counties appeared to be headed the same way . Voters in the Nassau County county — the most populous in America — bucked Republican rising star John Ferretti from town supervisor, choosing Democrat Joe Scianablo in a stunning three-point victory. That ran against more than a century of Republican leadership — with Scianablo becoming only the second Democrat to run Hempstead in about 120 years. Gov. Kathy Hochul celebrates on stage after winning reelection during an election night party on Tuesday, Nov. 3,. John Angelillo/UPI/Shutterstock Democrats were also on track to take Hempstead’s town clerk job, with Joylette Williams leading incumbent Republican Kate Murray by a few hundred votes Wednesday about a day after polls closed. Those results mirrored the nationwide midterms, which left Republicans reeling after Democrats snatched majorities in both Congress and the Senate while flipping five governorships. What Trump’s pick of Stephen Miller for chief of staff means for rest of his presidency And they weren’t just limited to Hempstead — the rest of

Farmingdale boys soccer feted with fitting parade after winning first-ever Long Island title

It’s been a historic year for the Dalers boys soccer team, which claimed its first Long Island championship with a 2-1 win over Lindenhurst on Wednesday — and the squad got a kick from an impromptu parade home with blaring fire trucks and troves of fans waiting for them on campus late at night. “We had a dance party in front of the high school,” longtime head coach Brian Weber told The Post. “It was parents, the superintendent. I mean, everybody was out — and it was just amazing. I just stood back and tried to take it all in.” As if the dream team needed any more injected emotion, it’s also been a cathartic experience for the boys who have rallied around junior striker Adam Vitulano . Farmingdale soccer claimed its first boys Long Island championship. Farmingdale Athletics His father, John, died from liver cancer during the playoffs, and the group became Vitulano’s extended family, he said. “The bond that they formed certainly later in the season, and certainly up to now, is unbreakable,” Weber said. “They really love each other.” Banged-up Seaford Vikings out for more after losing LI Championship last year Vitulano netted a golden, double-overtime goal
