Dover waterfront home sells for $4.1M, tops Strafford County sales

The median price for single-family homes sold in Strafford County in October was $530,000, an increase from $519,999 in September. Adam Dean, principal broker/partner of Duston Leddy Real Estate , in a market analysis for October, said the market is slowing down. However, Dean said, well-priced homes in good shape can receive multiple offers, citing one property recently receiving seven offers. "That's still happening to properties of good value," said Dean. He said it will be interesting to see what happens in November following the midterm election. He noted the stock market "exploded" on Wednesday, Nov. 4, the day after the election. However, the market sustained large losses on Nov. 5. There were 24 Strafford County homes total sold in October in the $500,000-549,999 and $600,000-649,999 price ranges, according to a report provided by Dean. Dover's 'can opener' Broadway bridge, known for stuck trucks, gets its own T-shirt

DOVER — The Broadway railroad bridge is so notorious for trucks getting stuck underneath, it has been called "the can opener" by some locals and is now featured on a T-shirt. There have been 10 truck strikes at the bridge so far in 2026, according to Dover police Capt. Mark Nadeau. There were six bridge strikes in 2025, seven in 2024 and nine in 2023. Foster's has reported for many years on strikes at the bridge, which was built in 1901. "It's crazy," said Joe Dirusso, who works at Papa Jay's Pizzeria, located very close to the steel truss bridge with a 9-foot, 6-inch clearance. "When it hits the bridge, it kind of sounds like the train ... like a bang of like cargo stopping. It kind of shakes the building. ... We go outside and then we see something hit the bridge." Dirusso said it's usually U-Hauls that hit the bridge, often operated by drivers unaware of the height of the truck they rented. Dirusso said the pizzeria staff hear trucks backing up all day because many truck drivers turn around to avoid getting stuck. Person killed by Amtrak Downeaster in Rollinsford was wearing headphones, police say

(This story has been updated with new information.) ROLLINSFORD — A pedestrian who was struck by an Amtrak Downeaster train and died Nov. 4 during the afternoon was wearing headphones and did not see or hear the train approaching, according to police. Lt. William Hancock of the Rollinsford Police Department said the person was struck by the train while it was traveling southbound. He said authorities are investigating, and the estimated time of the accident was just before 3 p.m. He said the accident occurred near the train tracks, by the intersection of Main and Mechanic streets. Police cited a preliminary investigation, saying the person was walking southbound on the tracks and wearing headphones. The identity of the person who died was not immediately released. Hancock could not say whether incident was a suicide or an accident, citing the ongoing investigation. Rollinsford's police and fire departments responded , along with Dover Fire and Rescue, Amtrak and the state medical examiner. The Amtrak Downeaster provides daily transportation between Boston and Brunswick, Maine, with Seacoast New Hampshire stops in Dover, Durham and Exeter.
