MIAMI - An investigation is underway after an early morning shooting across the street from The Shops at Midtown Miami.

It happened just after 4 a.m. along North Miami Avenue near NW 35th Street.

Miami police said a man who was shot multiple times was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center where he died.

A man who lives across the street said he heard the gunshots.

"It was like pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, it sounded like they were shooting at somebody. I was scared of really moving, whatever, I don't know, they were pretty close. So I stood still for a little while and then I started hearing the police coming," said Juan Gomez. "I was just glad it did not fly into my house and hit me."

Gabriel Moore, who lives in the area, said he saw the man who had been shot.

"The first thing I thought was it was one of my people because a lot of my people have dreadlocks," he said.

Moore said he was shaken by what he saw.

"I was nervous, I was paranoid, and I was scared at the same time," he said. "I don't know where he was from."

Miami police said officers were sent to the scene after they received two ShotSpotter alerts. Initially, they thought there might have been two people who had been shot.

"We saw two pairs of sandals and that's why we thought there might be two victims," said police officer Mike Vega.

He said they are working to determine what led to the shooting and how many people were involved.

"We are trying to piece it together to determine if we have one or more suspects," he said.

Police have not released the name of the man who died.
