MIAMI - Miami Beach City Commissioner Joe Magazine takes Sunday morning's shooting personally.
"The heart of our city," Magazine said. "On a Sunday. Mother's Day. It's likely that there's a mom waking up, now without her son."
The call came in just before 2:30 in the morning at the Exchange nightclub, located in the 1500 block of Washington Avenue.
Police say the victim was taken to the trauma center at Jackson Memorial, where he later died from his injuries.
Police haven't identified the victim, other than saying it is a male. Magazine and witnesses said the victim may be associated with the nightclub, but police haven't said whether he has any connection to the venue.
"We heard shots and that was it," said Levi Fuller, a witness. "And all of a sudden people started running."
People who saw and heard the chaos unfold are disturbed by it.
"I don't understand why people kill each other, but this is America," said Nicolea Lazar, a witness.
"Very worried. Very worried for us workers around here," said Maria Hernandez, another witness.
Magazine is getting concerned about what kinds of crowds are coming to this busy strip on South Beach.
"We're a city of law and order but we need to examine some of these commercial venues that are bringing an element that is not conducive with our city."
CBS News Miami reached out to the nightclub and Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner for comment, but we are waiting to hear back.
Police have not said if any arrests have been made.
