Documentary tells a Toledo story from AIDS epidemic
A bit of Toledo history is getting the spotlight from PBS as filmmaker and University of Toledo professor Holly Hey’s 30-minute documentary Sister Eileen and Her Boyz, an HIV in the Rust Belt Story will air on WGTE-TV at 3 p.m. Sunday. “When HIV came to Toledo, this was a remarkable city in the fact that we dealt with it very well,” said Sue Carter, a licensed counselor and social worker during the AIDS epidemic. “UT Medical Center was the only place in northwest Ohio that would treat AIDS patients.” “I worked there,” she said of the University of Toledo Medical Center, “so I know that people would come to me and say, ‘My doctor told me I couldn't come back anymore,’ or, ‘They told me to go to UT when, you know, I didn't have insurance.’” Stigma associated with a positive HIV/AIDS diagnosis ran rampant across the United States until better medical treatment became available.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss deliver flawless performance at Toledo Zoo
“I was saved by this angel, Alison Krauss,” intoned Robert Plant from the stage of the Toledo Zoo amphitheater on Friday night, gesturing to his musical partner. It was an emotional moment at an early summer concert that hit all the right notes. Plant, the rock titan who formerly fronted Led Zeppelin, has been teamed with Krauss, the bluegrass songbird and fiddle player since 2007 when the duo teamed up to record the Grammy-winning Raising Sand, which critics and music fans ate up. The follow up album, 2021’s Raise the Roof further cemented the fact that the Plant-Krauss team up is one of the best musical collaborations in decades. To a near capacity crowd, Plant and Krauss made magic. Clad in a black western shirt, Plant, 75, has kept his voice in remarkably great shape all these years, occasionally breaking out the glass-shattering high notes for which he was so beloved during his time with Led Zeppelin. Krauss, 52, possessing a crystal clear angelic voice that perfectly captures emotions ranging from joy to pain, also plays a mean fiddle, adding her own touch to the backing band’s amazing instrumentation.
Sidelines Italian does not mess around
Okay. I am just going to put it out there. I am more than a little miffed at the good people of Lambertville as well as the proprietors of Sidelines Italian Grille. Why has no one sung the praises of this gem of an Italian restaurant to everyone within driving distance? As someone who has always been a little “meh” when it comes to Italian food, I am now questioning why I did not have a nonna (grandma) in my life. The decor of Sidelines belies the quality and taste of the food we were about to enjoy. It is a laid back atmosphere with some Italian accents.

Upholding tradition: The Quintero Center honors traditional dance through fashion
The Sofia Quintero Art and Cultural Center is looking to step into summer the right way — through dance. The South Toledo organization, located at 1222 Broadway St., has opened an exhibit in its Jose Martinez Memorial Galeria called Bailes: A Celebration of Traditional Folkloric Dance, which celebrates, through fashion, the many ways in which dance is part of Latin American culture. Among the styles of dance profiled are mariachi, danza Azteca, and the “dance of the little old man.” “For us it was about telling the stories on the back end ... the foundations of dance,” Taylor Burciaga, the center’s executive director said. “It is the geography, the dress, and the music and why we see what we see.
