Lenawee County History: What made news 50 years ago
For someone who grew up in the 1970s and who still feels fairly young, it's hard for me to believe 1974 was 50 years ago. Earlier this week, I took a look back to see what was news a half-century ago this week. As was the case then, Father's Day was approaching, and...
Editorial: Maumee delay intolerable
After illegally dumping millions of gallons of raw sewage into the Maumee River for 25 years there are still Maumee citizens fighting reasonable rules to prevent further violations. (“Maumee still settling issue with EPA,” Wednesday) Incredibly, city council moved to delay for more discussion a much-needed sewer inspection requirement when a home is sold, as if they can continue to ignore federal law and feed the river with sewage that becomes algal blooms on Lake Erie. Read more Blade editorials There is nothing to discuss. Maumee must implement the inspection requirement and end discharge of sewage into the river. The alternative to fouling the Maumee is allowing backups in residential basements.
Walton: Best hometowns are little ones
When I get nostalgic for the little town I grew up in, I will occasionally drive there, park the car, and just walk around. It’s about an hour south of Toledo, so it’s an easy drive. The experience is therapeutic, and I don’t make it nearly enough. Walking down the village’s main street is more than a trip back in time. It soothes the soul to see the old grocery store still sitting on the same spot and still crowding life’s essentials into two narrow aisles. There was a time, when I was a child, that you didn’t even need...

Free gas cap testing to begin
Gas cap testing and replacement events will take place over the next two weeks at various sites throughout the Toledo area. Residents will be able to drive up to a test site sponsored by Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments, and staff will ensure the vehicle’s gas cap is properly sealed. If there is a leak, residents will be offered a free replacement. Leaky gas caps reduce fuel efficiency and intensify air pollution by releasing fuel vapors into the atmosphere. While older vehicles are most likely to have a leak, any vehicle could have a loose cap. If a vehicle’s check engine light is on, it may need a new gas cap. Gas cap testing will take place between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. beginning next week. The first two events are Monday at Bowling Green State University’s Lot 13 near the football stadium and Tuesday in the former Sears parking lot near Central and Secor avenues in West Toledo. Other days and locations can be found at tmacog.org/events.
