MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A community is mourning after one of their neighbors was gunned down overnight in a triple shooting on Hawthorne Street.

As officers sort out the aftermath of the tragic shooting, WREG spoke to people on the street who say the deceased has lived in that community since he was a child.

“It was a good family. Always a good family on the street, but sometimes we choose roads that are not for us,” an anonymous male neighbor said.

People living in the 800 block of Hawthorne Street say they live peaceful lives, but that peace was rocked by unshakable violence late Saturday night.

The male neighbor asked not to be identified but told WREG he was home with his family when they heard several gunshots shortly before 9 p.m.

When he looked outside, he said he saw a disturbing image of who appeared to be his neighbor.

“We saw a body lying on the ground, and then the ambulance came. We saw a body lying on the street. And you got that body lying on the street and another body,” the neighbor said.

Memphis Police say three people were shot.

Two victims were rushed to the hospital.

Tragically, the third victim died on the scene.

“God bless him. God bless his family,” the neighbor said. “If they need anything from us, we’re here for them.”

Neighbors say one of the victims had lived on the street since he was a small child.

“I got him involved in sports. I used to read to him. I used to be around him a lot -took him to church,” the neighbor said.

Police did not give a motive for the shooting, but did say the suspects knew each other.

As the community grapples with the loss of one of their own, the neighbor offers advice to other young people who could find themselves going on the wrong path.

“Young men please get some help, gravitate toward a mentor,” the neighbor said. ” We want to see you get old. We want to see you take care of your family.”

There have been no reported arrests, but MPD says this is an ongoing investigation.
