‘What’s next?’: Memphis woman seeks answers after driver allegedly kills brother

    2024-05-07

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - What started off as a normal Sunday for one Memphis family turned deadly after Memphis Police said a driver ran a red light.

25-year-old Malik Humphrey died in a hospital days later on April 24, according to his family.

His sister, Tierra Humphrey, said since then, they’ve been left in the dark about what’s happening in the investigation.

“You leave the house, and you might not make it home just because somebody does not care,” she told FOX13.

A police report said a driver in a blue Camaro ran a red light at the intersection of Winchester Road and Knight Road, hitting Humphrey’s car.

“It’s been very painful, something that, you know, I really wouldn't wish on anyone,” said Humphrey’s sister.

Police charged the other driver with misdemeanor counts of driving without a license and financial responsibility.

He was released on a $5,000 bail.

FOX13 is not reporting his name because he's not been charged in Humphrey's death at this point.

Humphrey believed more needs to be done.

“What are the next steps? What is going to happen?,” said Humphrey. “They’re the same types of cars. People drive them recklessly, you know, just they're not caring about other people's lives.”

Tennessee lawmakers passed a bill last month that would increase the penalties for reckless driving and drag racing.

Governor Bill Lee told FOX13 Tuesday he plans to sign it.

It won't make a difference in this case, but it could help slow down drivers in the future, so other families don't face similar loss.

“He loved to laugh, loved to tell jokes. He loved his girls. He loved music. And I just, Malik didn't get a chance to even accomplish half the goals that he wanted to accomplish.”

Memphis Police confirmed to FOX13 this is still an active and open investigation.
