Lima, Pioneer latest communities to pass data center moratoriums
The city of Lima and the village of Pioneer are the latest pair of northwest Ohio municipalities to approve data center moratoriums. Lima’s is for 18 months. Pioneer’s is for six months. Votes came at the respective Lima and Pioneer council meetings on Monday night. Both were unanimous decisions, although Lima’s vote had an abstention from Councilman Jesse Lowe. The Lima moratorium came at the request of Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith. The council granted her request for an 18-month pause. “Mayor Smith requested the moratorium to give the city time to establish clear standards for future data center development before making additional long-term commitments of city resources and infrastructure,” Jessica Begonia, Lima public information officer, said. “With data center development accelerating,” she continued, “and state and federal policies continuing to evolve, the 18-month pause allows Lima to evaluate those changes while protecting its ability to reliably serve residents and existing industries and preserve capacity for a diverse range of future economic development opportunities.” Mayor Smith was not available to elaborate on that statement Tuesday. Councilmen Lowe told other council members during the meeting he was abstaining because he “did not have enough information” about the moratorium they were voting on.

BG Planning Commission sides with neighbors and recommends house remains single-family zoning
Nine residents of Bowling Green last week defended the single-family zoning in their neighborhood of North Main Street and Curtis Avenue. The neighbors asked that the city’s Planning Commission not support the request that a home built around 1900 be rezoned R-2, which would allow for a duplex. With a vote of 7-2, the commission agreed with the neighbors and will recommend to City Council that the property remain zoned Pedestrian-Residential.

Toledo eyes landmark designations for more than 100 buildings
Toledo City Council plans to work its way through a list of nearly 150 buildings and designate them as local landmarks — a status that would prevent exterior changes without approval. For some buildings, the landmark recognition gives new status to Toledo icons. Among the buildings are Tony Packo’s original location in East Toledo, the Overland smokestack, and the clubhouses of Inverness and Toledo country clubs. There are also a few oddities in the stack of buildings that council will consider designating as landmarks. Several of the buildings are not in Toledo: the Wildwood Manor House is in Sylvania Township and Hope Lutheran Church is in Ottawa Hills. Another property near Monroe Street was demolished sometime before 2023. The majority of the list, about 80 properties, are religious buildings belonging to all denominations. There are fire and police stations, many Toledo Public Schools buildings, at least six libraries, a pump house, warehouses, office buildings, and hospitals. Not all property owners are excited about the recognition. Council can declare any property a local landmark without permission from owners, effectively preventing exterior changes, repairs, renovations, or demolition without prior approval. The Diocese of Toledo, which owns a large number of historic churches,

Abandoned Oakwood Avenue property addressed by city officials
TOLEDO, Ohio — A boarded-up home on Oakwood Avenue that neighbors say has become a growing safety concern is now moving into the early stages of the foreclosure process.
