West Side’s Sage flashes All-State abilities on both sides of the ball in victory over South Fremont
DAYTON — A game that was billed as a matchup between two of the top offensive players in 3A football was decided by a pair of defensive plays. The West Side Pirates (3-0, 0-0) turned a pair of takeaways into 14 points — the deciding scores in a 28-13 victory over the South Fremont Cougars (2-1, 0-0) at West Side High School. Longtime West Side head coach Tyson Moser spoke after the game about the significance of the two defensive plays and ensuing scores. “Turnovers are huge, then when you score on turnovers, that’s even bigger,” he said. As for the overall performance of his team, Moser expla...

Hillcrest's late winner propels 3-2 victory over Pocatello
POCATELLO − In sports, sometimes a game is decided simply on who wants it more. On Thursday night at Lookout Field, the Hillcrest Knights girls soccer team wanted it more. The Knights came from behind twice in 80 minutes, and behind two goals and an assist from senior midfielder Brinley Nelson, they defeated the Pocatello Thunder 3-2, moving them to 5-0-1 and first place in the 5A High Country Conference. The Knights and Thunder were tied with under 10 minutes to go when Nelson trotted over to the left corner flag and placed the ball down. She swung it into the box, where it found freshman defender Taylee Ricks. Ricks, who was relentless in the box all night, got there first and powered the shot past the goalkeeper to give the Knights the win. The Knights came in knowing this was going to be a battle between two of the best teams in the 5A High Country Conference. “We knew Pocatello was a really good team, and well-coached,” Hillcrest head coach Brian Nelson said. “They had that championship pedigree. Some of these girls were on that team a couple years ago that won the state championship, and so we knew

Deep roots, high expectations: Century's new principal draws on 14 years in the building
POCATELLO — New Century High School principal Ben Cody has deep roots in the area, with family history dating back to the 1920s. With more than a decade of experience at the school, he’s now working to build on its academic success while expanding opportunities in the arts and athletics. For nine years, Cody was an English teacher at Century High School, developing curriculum early in his career through the Advanced Placement program and finding leadership opportunities along the way. He extended those teaching skills into athletics, coaching Century baseball for about eight years during that same span. Those cumulative experiences helped him grow naturally within the school and led to his promotion to assistant principal, a position he held for the last four years. Now in year 14 at Century, Cody will lead the school as principal, drawing on what he describes as an established culture of academics and high expectations. “It’s that vast experience that helped land me where I’m at, and it sets a solid foundation — while still understanding there’s work to do and a lot to learn,” Cody said. “But it’s helpful to be familiar with the systems you’re running here, where we’ve been and

Rigby gets big night from quarterback Evan Freeman, a former All-State receiver, in Rumble win
POCATELLO — The Rigby Trojans, winners of back-to-back 6A state championships, came into the 2026 season with holes at several key spots. Of the eight Trojans who were All-State selections last year, seven were seniors, including Second-Team quarterback Jake Flowers. Flowers’ departure left, perhaps, the biggest hole for Rigby and head coach Armando Gonzalez. If their Rocky Mountain Rumble 27-16 victory over the Farmington Phoenix (UT) is any sign of the season to come, the Trojans have their quarterback, in none other than Evan Freeman, who was a Second-Team All-State selection last year at w...

Poky freshman Lucy Tuia appears poised to fill 2025 grad Abby Lusk’s spot
POCATELLO — After being eliminated in the state play-in round last season, the Pocatello Thunder and head coach Paige Leatham went into the offseason looking for answers to several questions. None of those questions, though, was bigger than, “Who will replace three-time All-State outside hitter Abby Lusk?” There was no way Leatham could have expected a freshman to show up and fill Lusk’s massive shoes. But Lucy Tuia appears to be doing precisely that after one week and eight matches of action. Leatham called Tuia’s arrival at Pocatello High School and immediate emergence “the best surprise of ...
