Man indicted for murder in 'vicious and completely unprovoked' subway shoving: Manhattan DA

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A man accused of randomly shoving a subway rider into the path of an oncoming train in East Harlem late last month was indicted for murder on Wednesday.

The Manhattan D.A’s Office announced the indictment of Carlton McPherson, 24, on one count of second-degree murder.

Prosecutors allege McPherson is the man who pushed Jason Volz, 54, onto the tracks at the 125th Street 4/5/6 stop just as a train was entering the station on the evening of March 25.

According to court documents, Volz was standing on the northbound 4/5 platform at 6:55 p.m. when McPherson walked up with his arms outstretched and pushed him in front of the oncoming train.

Straphangers watched in horror as the train, whose operator was unable to stop in time, ran over Volz. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement announcing the indictment, Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg called the deadly shove a “vicious and completely unprovoked act of violence.”

“Mr. Volz was a father and native New Yorker, and my heart goes out to his family and loved ones in their ongoing grief,” Bragg said.

According to prosecutors, McPherson attempted to flee after the attack, but eyewitnesses alerted police officers, who arrested him at the station.
