    Severe weather coverage for Lubbock and surrounding areas, May 16, 2024

    LUBBOCK, Texas — Severe weather was expected for the far southern South Plains until 11 p.m. Thursday night. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued by the National Weather Service for Hale and Lubbock Counties.

    According to NWS, severe storms capable of producing wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail up to 2″ in diameter will be possible through late this evening.

    A Hazardous Weather Outlook per the NWS this morning showed scattered to numerous thunderstorms would be possible in the evening in the following counties: Parmer, Castro, Swisher, Briscoe, Hall, Childress, Bailey, Lamb, Hale, Floyd, Motley, Cottle, Cochran, Hockley, Lubbock, Crosby, Dickens, King, Yoakum, Terry, Lynn, Garza, Kent and Stonewall.

    Some storms may become severe, especially across the southern South Plains and Rolling Plains, bringing up to ping pong ball sized hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph. Locally heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding, NWS added.
