Where Ithaca Meets Ethiopia: Deep Dive on Hawi
At the start of the semester, out of the blue, my friend asked to get dinner. While I expected him to suggest a standard Collegetown spot like Collegetown Bagels, Xi’an Street Food or Pokelava, he instead recommended a restaurant, unlike any eatery offered in Ithaca: Hawi. Located in Ithaca Commons, Hawi serves traditional Ethiopian dishes. I was shocked when my friend told me that there was an Ethiopian restaurant in the area, and as I had never heard of Hawi before, we immediately went for dinner the next day.

Ice sculptures and fire show light up upstate NY winter festival
Hundreds of people bundled up in winter coats and hats and headed to Main Street in downtown Canandaigua, New York, on Saturday, Feb. 21, for the 10th annual Fire & Ice Winter Festival. Visitors strolled along Main Street, stopping to snap photos of intricate ice sculptures displayed in front of local businesses. They also waved to Jeff Peden — better known as “Juggling Jeff” the stilt walker, or “Shorty,” as he jokingly introduced himself — towering nearly nine feet tall on his stilts. Peden, known for his stilt walking and airplay juggling comedy, has become a regular at the festival in recent years. He said he enjoys connecting with the community, and some local shop owners even invite him inside while he’s still on his stilts. “It’s so great to see the whole community come out here,” Peden said. More than a dozen vendors lined the street selling food, artwork, merchandise and other goods. Some offered hands-on experiences with animals. Jo Lynn Stresing of Kindred Moon Kennels traveled from Camden to Canandaigua with four of her purebred Siberian huskies to share her passion for dogsledding. “It’s one of the few times as a dog owner where you’re stepping into their
