Coalson named city finance director
Mount Airy has a new finance director — although the word “new” doesn’t really apply, given Sherri Coalson’s familiarity with the work environment at City Hall. Coalson previously was employed there for 11 years, serving the municipality in various capacities, before recently returning as finance director. That position’s responsibilities include overseeing city government revenues and expenditures, along with playing a major role in preparing the municipal budget each year. ...
Lady Cavs stub toe against Pulaski
Carroll County softball edged Pulaski County early in the season up at Dublin but wasn’t as fortunate Monday night at Cavalier Park as the Cougars picked up key hits in five straight innings to earn an 8-2 non-district victory. Carroll County (15-3) started out the game strong as Holly Miller picked up the first of her three base hits and eventually scored the game’s first run when Katherine Lindamood was issued a bases-loaded walk. The Lady Cavaliers did plate one run in the rally but...

Hearing Thursday for major rezoning
It doesn’t resemble a full-scale industrial area, lacking loud machinery, smokestacks or large truck traffic, but a section of Riverside Drive and East Pine Street is actually zoned for such use — which officials want to alter. City planners are recommending that 14 parcels with 12 different addresses along those and other streets in Mount Airy be rezoned from their present M-1 (industrial) classification to B-2 (General Business). These make up 18.5 acres altogether. ...
