John Mills is the man who died at PGA Championship

Lost in all the jokes and most of the talk about Scottie Scheffler’s arrest Friday morning ahead of the second round of the PGA Championship is that a man died prior to the arrest.

69-year-old John Mills of Crestwood, Kentucky died Friday morning after being hit by a shuttle bus while crossing Shelbyville Road to get to his job working security at the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville.

Mills’ family distributed a photo of John and said “he was enjoying his time at Valhalla while working security. He liked to stay busy in retirement. We love him and will miss him.”

The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) pronounced Mills dead at the scene. They described the 69-year-old’s death as an accident.

“This is a preliminary statement regarding the facts and circumstances of what occurred near Valhalla Golf Club early this morning,” LMPD said in a statement. “We are still in the process of gathering information and investigating what transpired today. At about 5:07 this morning, in front of Gate 2 at Valhalla Golf Club, a pedestrian was fatally struck by a shuttle bus.

“LMPD expresses its sincere condolences to the family of the individual who died as a result of that collision. All lanes of traffic at the scene were closed while the fatality investigation occurred. LMPD personnel were also directing traffic around the scene. While an officer was directing traffic, an encounter with a motorist attempting to make entry into a restricted area ultimately led to the driver being arrested. We are in the process of conducting a thorough investigation. We are appreciative that all parties involved are fully cooperating.”

The latter part of the statement had to do with Scheffler’s arrest.

The PGA Championship was delayed by an hour and 20 minutes after Mills’ death.
