2024 Kentucky Oaks odds, predictions, contenders, horses: Surprising picks by expert who nailed 10 doubles

There will be two sets of relatives in the 2024 Kentucky Oaks, half-sisters Into Champagne and Leslie's Rose, both sired by Into Mischief. Family ties don't end with the horses, as trainer Steve Asmussen will saddle Our Pretty Woman and compete against his son, Keith, who will ride Lemon Muffin. If that weren't enough family competition for Friday's Kentucky Oaks 2024, jockey Jose Ortiz will be aboard Regulatory Risk and compete against his brother, Irad, who will jockey Leslie's Rose. Tarifa lacks the family ties of others in the 2024 Kentucky Oaks field, but she possesses the shortest 2024 Kentucky Oaks odds at 7-2. Leslie's Rose (4-1) and Just F Y I (9-2) round out the top three favorites for Kentucky Oaks 150, taking place at Churchill Downs.
A fixture in the horse racing world who has been writing about, talking about and betting on races for years, Demling enters the 2024 Kentucky Oaks having nailed the winner of the Belmont Stakes four of the last six years, including an exacta in 2022 with Mo Donegal and Nest. He also nailed Flightline's win at the Breeders' Cup Classic in November of that year.
Demling is at his best in the biggest horse races in the world like the Kentucky Oaks 2024. In fact, he has hit 10 of the last 15 Derby-Oaks doubles at Churchill Downs. That means he held a ticket with the winners of both races all but five times in the last 15 years. He's also called 10 of the last 19 Preakness winners, including nailing his Preakness winner, exacta and superfecta picks in 2023, keenly understanding when the Derby winner was poised for victory or a massive upset.
Two years ago, he nailed the Kentucky Oaks exacta with Secret Oath and Nest. Anyone who has followed him is up huge. Now, Demling has handicapped the 2024 Kentucky Oaks odds, made his picks and constructed his bets. You can only see them at SportsLine .
Top 2024 Kentucky Oaks expert picks
One surprise: Demling is fading Tarifa, even though she is the 7-2 favorite and daughter of 2006 Preakness winner Bernardini. Favorites have let down bettors over the last decade-plus history of this race. Since 2011, the Kentucky Oaks favorite is just 2 for 13, which amounts to a 15.4% win rate. By comparison, the Kentucky Derby favorite is 6 for 13 (46.2%) over that same span.
Also not in the favorite's favor is her jockey's poor history at the Kentucky Oaks. Flavien Prat is a two-time Triple Crown race winner with over 1,600 career victories, but none of those have come in this race. He's 0-for-6 in Kentucky Oaks starts, with zero finishes in the money. While Tarifa has an Oaks-winning trainer and owner, you're only as strong as your weakest link, and Prat's Kentucky Oaks record is hard to ignore. See who else to fade at SportsLine .
Another curveball: Demling is high on Where's My Ring, even though she's a 15-1 longshot. She's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The horse didn't have the look of a Kentucky Oaks contender as a 2-year-old when she went 0-for-5, not even finishing in the money in her two Graded Stakes races. Then, trainer Val Brinkerhoff outfitted her with blinkers when she turned three, and that turned around her career. She was runner-up in her first two starts this year and broke through with her first victory at the Gazelle Stakes on April 6.
Where's My Ring was sired by Twirling Candy, who was a versatile thoroughbred who won Graded Stakes races on dirt, turf and synthetic surfaces. The filly also has a Triple Crown race winner as a sibling as her half-brother, Rombauer, won the 2021 Preakness. Where's My Ring will likely bump into other siblings at Churchill Downs since she's one of seven horses competing in Graded Stakes races this weekend that were sired by Twirling Candy, showing just how impressive a pedigree Where's My Ring possesses.
