New photo book shows life on the streets of Portland
Three years ago, Keith Zimmerman picked up a camera for the first time at the age of 49. His new photo book "Outside" is his self-published debut depicting the lives of dozens of people sheltering on the streets of Portland — an experience that he is personally familiar with. This month Keith celebrated eight years of sobriety after experiencing addiction and homelessness for decades. “People living outside are just like you — they’re our neighbors,” said Keith, who goes by his artist name, Keith Z. “I wanted to allow a space for somebody who’s not necessarily had that experience to be able to get close to these people and consider them as human beings.” Video and writing by Jireh Deng/OPB Additional photos by Keith Zimmerman.

Holst Architecture designed this detail to suggest tree trunks reaching toward a canopy. The forest reference is built into the architecture, rather than applied afterward as a decorative theme.

A single copper coin decided the name of a major American city. Two founders flipped it, and the winner picked the name of his hometown back East. That coin still exists, and you can see it in person. It sits in a museum that also lets you sniff salmon, hazelnuts, and wheat. Yes, history here comes with a scent track.
