Dead or trapped pests found at Garden City eatery

Recent health inspections in some Garden City restaurants found accumulations of insects on insect traps and more between September and October, according to Wayne County Health Department inspection reports. Many of the violations have been corrected. The presence of violations in a past inspection does not necessarily mean the establishment has the same violations today. Inspection reports can be found at swordsolutions.com/inspections/. Below is a list of violations found at a few restaurants in Garden City. Great China Garden, 32293 Ford Road During a routine inspection on September 18, an inspector noted several problems at Great China Garden. ∎ Observed two bottles of powdered lye for floor drain cleaning near the dishwashing area. The bottles of lye state that they are for industrial use only, and warnings on the manufacturer's label indicate to keep this product away from kitchens due to its poisonous and fatal nature if swallowed. Poisonous or toxic materials shall be used according to the manufacturer's directions included in labeling and, for a pesticide, the manufacturer's label instructions that state that use is allowed in a food establishment. Remove all lye from the facility and discontinue use of lye for floor drain cleaning immediately. During inspection, the

Livonia's Yard House restaurant sets opening date

A second Yard House restaurant is opening in Metro Detroit this fall. At the former Bahama Breeze Island Grille on Haggerty Road, the new beer-centric restaurant will offer a massive draft beer selection and a large food menu. Highlights include pub grub, burgers, seafood, steaks and special menus for vegan diners and those with gluten sensitivities. The Livonia Yard House is set to open Dec. 7, according to the company's website. The brand opened a Yard House in Troy in late 2018. It touts the "world's largest selection of draft beer." It was founded in 1996 in California and now has around 100 locations in the United States. Yard House is part of the Darden restaurant group, which also owns Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Ruth's Chris Steak House and the Capital Grille, which opened a Livonia location in June . Abdul El-Sayed is for 'shawarma law'. Where to try his favorite, others

Michigan's senator-elect, Abdul El-Sayed, this week joked that he is for "shawarma" not "Sharia" law, when speaking to reporters this week. "Do not believe the people who say I'm for Sharia law, I'm for shawarma law," El-Sayed said at a campaign stop in Macomb County. The joke made light of those who are concerned that El-Sayed, the first Muslim ever elected to the U.S. Senate, will force all Americans to adhere to the religious concepts of Islam, an accusation he has denied. “I’ve reached a point I think in my life that I’m looking at making sure that my legacy is solid.” Rob Brown has spent decades making sure Detroit sounds good, but his story begins long before the big stages and festivals. From summer visits to Meridian, Mississippi, where his uncle Paul worked in radio, to building homemade speakers and learning turntables in a neighborhood basement near the University of Detroit, Rob’s love for sound grew through family, curiosity, and community. Longtime metro Detroit restaurants close as owners cite rising costs

Across metro Detroit, longtime restaurants plus a bakery are among the businesses that closed in October. Several of the closing announcements brought diners and customers out in droves for one last taste, slice or sip. On the October list of closings is the last location of the Sign of the Beefcarver in Royal Oak, Capri Italian Bakery in Dearborn and Perry’s Pizza in Clawson – all in business for decades. And like other recent closings, owners cited the economy and high food costs as the reason for closing. Here’s a roundup of metro Detroit's late September and October closings. Atwater in the Park Grosse Pointe Park This Grosse Pointe Park brewery, with a taproom and biergarten in a former church, poured its last pints on Oct. 23. After more than a decade in business, Atwater in the Park ended its run with a farewell party. No reason for the closure was given. Camelia’s Mexican Grill Royal Oak In Royal Oak on 11 Mile Road, the neighborhood spot is permanently closed, per its Google listing. No information was given on its Facebook page or website.
