Deputy sheriffs, after receiving a report of a missing child, were dispatched to a body of water near the 400 block of Halcyon Place around 4:30 p.m.

Lucas was later located in the water about 40 minutes later. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office said.

The boy was visiting family at a housing complex near the water, according to a neighbor who spoke with KRON4. Lucas fell off the dock in the back of the home.

Neighbors say a drowning on Bethel Island is quite rare.

“It’s very saddening,” said neighbor Darlene Weaver. “I’m very sad. It breaks my heart.”

Weaver has lived in the area for three years and never heard of a drowning in her community until now. No other details about the circumstances of the drowning are available at this time.
