Johnson wins race for NC House 113 after taxes fueled contest

HENDERSON COUNTY - A powerful legislative insider faced a former presidential pilot who wanted to shake up Raleigh. Republican state Rep. Jake Johnson and Democrat John Morgan competed for North Carolina House District 113, covering Polk County and portions of Henderson, McDowell and Rutherford counties, in a contest centered on affordability, education and government accountability. Johnson, a Saluda native, won election to the Polk County Board of Commissioners in 2016 before being appointed to the General Assembly in 2019. He entered the contest as House deputy majority whip, with leadership roles overseeing state government and information technology. Morgan, a retired Air Force pilot, flew reconnaissance missions during the Vietnam War and later aircraft carrying Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He also served as a Saluda city commissioner. The candidates clashed over a proposed constitutional amendment requiring the legislature to limit local property tax increases . Johnson supported the measure, citing excessive local spending. Morgan opposed it, arguing Republican lawmakers were undermining local control. Gaston County board approves new property values; residents react

Following a deadlocked debate and intense public scrutiny, the Gaston County Board of Commissioners voted 4-2 Friday afternoon, Oct. 30 to pass the 2027 Schedule of Values, officially establishing the framework for how local real estate will be assessed in the upcoming reappraisal. The decision came during a swift 45-minute special meeting at the Gaston County Courthouse, reversing a 3-3 tie on Oct. 27 that had stalled the measure. Commissioner Tom Keigher made the motion to approve the schedule, with Vice Chair Bob Hovis providing the second. Joining Keigher and Hovis in voting yes were Chair Chad Brown and Commissioner Allen Fraley, whose absence on Oct. 27 had left the board in a stalemate. Commissioners Cathy Cloninger and Scott Shehan stood firm in opposition, voting no for a second time. Jim Bailey was not present due to a family matter. When contacted after the meeting, he affirmed his no vote from the previous meeting. The Oct. 30 vote ensures the county meets state statutory deadlines to adopt the property valuation rules before Jan. 1, avoiding potential revenue impacts and keeping the tax appraisal schedule on track. Here’s a look at plans for 450 new homes and townhomes pitched across the Rock Hill region. Details are still pending on a 309-home subdivision proposal in Lancaster County. Homebuilder True Homes applied to build in the Edgewater community on 106 acres with a project called The Pinery East . The site is off Monterrico Drive and Antela Lane. County planners deferred a decision for a month on Sept. 15 due to traffic and related concerns, but didn’t reschedule last month. This month’s planning commission agenda for Nov. 17 hasn’t been published. A company called PLJS Property applied to build a 66-home subdivision on 98 acres west of Clover. Fieldstone Meadow would go on S.C. 55 just outside town limits, near Lester Road. Home lots would be an acre or more each. Four new internal roads off the main highway would serve the subdivision. On a beautiful afternoon in rural Edgecombe County, a crowd gathered under the late‑season sun to hear a message that has become impossible to ignore across eastern North Carolina: Families are hurting, and area leaders say the state must do more. The event last month brought together Gov. Josh Stein; N.C. Rep. Dante Pittman, D-24th District; N.C. Sen. Kandie Smith, D-5th District; Democratic N.C.
