When Paul Gladieux was killed last fall in an alcohol-related wrong-way collision on the Anthony Wayne Bridge, his mother saw a news report about the crash before police arrived with the terrible news about her son. Paula Gladieux told a Lucas County Common Pleas judge Tuesday how the 30-year-old Northwood man’s absence has reverberated through his family, down to his rescue cat, Oliver. “Every night, he sits in front of Paul’s bedroom door wanting to be let in” and meows inconsolably, she said during a victim-impact statement at the sentencing of Jewel Martinez, 19, who pleaded guilty last month to aggravated vehicular homicide and two OVI-related charges. Judge Lindsay Navarre sentenced Martinez — who acknowledged in her own lengthy statement having been, before the Sept. 24 crash, a hard-drinking party girl unconcerned with her actions’ consequences — to nine years in state prison.
