Fiction Addiction drives first mobile bookstore into Redding
They started out as book lovers. Now, Kayla Rhodes and Falen Shaw are in charge of what is likely Redding's first mobile book store. Since opening Fiction Addiction Mobile Bookstore in late May, the pair have toodled their tricked-out trailer to places where they hope readers gather. So far, they've appeared at locations including Black Rose Coffee & Tea, Pourboys Tapyard, Sublime Cake Design and the Redding Pride Festival at Whistlestop Park. One recent morning, the pair set up on the parking lot next to Kaleidoscope Coffee Company on Athens Avenue in Redding. Shoppers that day browsed through shelves stocked floor to ceiling with more than 400 books. Categories ranged from science fiction to romance, and from thrillers to "romantasy," a popular genre blending romance and magic that features young heroines in a fantasy world who fall for a sexy love interest who’s usually not human. Romance of all kinds looms large on the shelves. That includes sub genres dark romance, sports romance and cowboy romance — all Shaw's favorites. And then there are fantasy, science fiction and thriller-themed books, which Rhodes said she adores. And don't forget the horror. Rhodes said a popular seller is "Dungeon Crawler Carl," which

Redding Farmers Market spices things up with hot pepper-eating contest
The Redding Farmers Market is asking for competitive pepper eaters who can handle the heat to please step forward. The market is signing up people to compete at its inaugural Hot Pepper Eating Contest on Saturday, August 15. This year's contestants will gulp their way through a lineup of peppers, starting off with mild shishitos and jalapeño varieties, organizers said. Then it escalates through serranos, cayennes, Thai chilis, Scotch Bonnets/habaneros and finishes with the legendary Ghost Pepper, which can top more than 1 million Scoville Heat Units. The SHU measurement indicates the concentration of capsaicin chemical compound that gives some edible peppers a burning taste kick. Invented in 1912 by American pharmacologist Wilbur Scoville, the SHU measurement method represents the number of times the concentration of capsaicinoids needs to be diluted before it’s no longer detectable, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Weather temperatures, the type of soil and location where the pepper was grown also factor in to how hot a pepper tastes, according to the agency. The competition at the Redding Farmers Market will host three competition heats — ahem — at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Registration is $10 and prizes will
