Oasis retail center OK delayed, but Redding has reason to stay upbeat
While plans for a dramatically scaled down shopping center on land where Costco once wanted to build appear headed for approval, Redding is delaying its decision by a month. That’s because the Redding Planning Commission on Tuesday, June 23, directed staff to work with the applicant on revised use permit conditions that Commissioner Kent Manuel recommended. The Oasis Shopping Center project, in the area of Oasis Road and Twin View Boulevard in north Redding, will return for approval on July 28. Enact Partners, a Southern California-based company that owns the land, wants to build the 99,275-square-foot commercial center that would include two hotels, three drive-through quick-serve restaurants, a restaurant, drive-through coffee kiosk, two retail stores, and a gas station/convenience market with a car wash. The shopping center is significantly smaller than the 152,000-square-foot Costco in south Redding, which opened in November 2022 after ditching plans a few years earlier to build on Oasis Road . The revised vision for the property will encompass 14.5 of the 150 acres Enact owns off Oasis Road. “This feels like … a smart way to move forward, whether this property owner develops it or not,” commissioner Joshua Johnson said. “You know, this property has

Find out if you're in a wildfire power shutoff risk zone in Redding
People and businesses located in four Redding communities identified as being at high-risk of wildfire breakouts now can be subject to power shutoffs. The Redding City Council unanimously approved possible power shutdowns as part of the Redding Electric Utility 's formalized wildfire mitigation plan covering areas in the Tierra Oaks, Lake Boulevard, Sunset Terrace and Branstetter communities. Customers located near those areas may also be affected if the electrical infrastructure supplying their electricity passes through a high-risk area requiring a power shutoff, said REU. The newly-approved plan also outlines specific conditions that must be present before a "public safety power shutoff," or PSPS, could happen, REU Director Nicholas Zettel told the council during its meeting on June 16. REU said 1,866 residential customers and 88 commercial customers are located in the areas now subject to potential power safety shutoffs. In addition, 134 customers are low income and 19 are medically vulnerable, Zettel said. Zettel said cutting power to communities to lessen wildfire risk would be "a last resort option," depending on whether certain weather conditions are met over a six-hour period and how many local fire crew members could respond if a blaze broke out in the target communities, which
