Forecasters Highlight New Winter Warning Tool Ahead of Awareness Day

Sioux Falls, SD — Starting this winter, you may see the phrase “Particularly Dangerous Situation” (PDS) included with Blizzard Warnings or Ice Storm Warnings. This is reserved for rare, high-impact events where forecasters have a high degree of confidence that life-threatening conditions will develop. Peter Rodgers, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, says the designation is extremely rare and will only be used in the most significant winter weather events.

Another rainy and windy few days ahead before drying out late this week

(Dakota News Now) - We have another couple of gloomy and cooler days ahead of us before we see some sunshine returning later this week. For today, many are starting out dry, but rain will fill back into the area through the rest of the day and into tonight. Areas east of i-29 could still see up to another inch of moisture by the time this system finally wraps up, and that’s on top of the 1-2 inches that already fell yesterday! This rain won’t be as heavy as what was falling yesterday morning, but still be aware that there could be sitting water in low-lying areas. Temperatures will be cooler today, with highs primarily in the upper 40s, and some low 50s to the southeast. Some of us will hit our daytime highs this morning with falling temperatures in the afternoon. It’ll still be windy too, with a northwest wind coming in around 15-20 mph, and gusts exceeding 40 mph at times.
