What will Columbia's new Congaree riverfront park look like? Here's a peek

After months of public feedback, the city of Columbia this week unveiled sweeping plans for remaking a broad swath of downtown riverfront into the city’s newest park. Plans for gardens, walkways, bike paths, community spaces and a boat launch are all slated for a future park along the banks of the Congaree River between the Gervais Street bridge and the University of South Carolina’s baseball park. The city and park designers showcased the plans for the first time at a public forum Monday at the Senate’s End event venue close to the site of the long-planned public development. They also frankly addressed the challenges to getting the project off the ground in such a challenging location. “It’s a tricky situation,” because much of the 100-acre site, long undeveloped at the edge of Columbia’s Vista district, sits in an area that is frequently flooded when storms swell the size of the Congaree, said Sarah Astheimer with the New York-based landscape architecture firm Field Operations, which designed plans for the future park. “It will be a green sponge,” Astheimer said. “Previous plans called for more development and buildings, and that would not be a smart thing to do.” Instead, the designers plan

It’s trash day in your neighborhood, and you have your can sitting along the curb waiting for pickup. Then along comes a neighbor walking their dog and throws their pet’s bag of feces into your trash can. Putting aside the fact that the act is not very neighborly, is it against the law? South Carolina law says that a person cannot “dump, throw, drop, deposit, discard, or otherwise dispose of litter or other solid waste upon ... private property in the State for which he is not the legal owner or a person otherwise granted permission by the legal owner.” Horry County has separate solid-waste rules , and using someone else’s bin without permission could still prompt a complaint. The law also states that “garbage” that is placed in trash cans for pickup “shall not include human or animal feces.” There are other city ordinances with rules about picking up and disposing of your pet’s waste. This national retailer plans to open a new store in Columbiana Centre mall

A growing company that offers well-known fragrances is setting up a shop in a popular Columbia mall. Perfumania, which has more than 100 stores across the U.S., is coming soon to the Columbiana Centre mall in the busy Harbison shopping area northwest of downtown Columbia. There are banners up on a storefront in the mall touting that Perfumania is “opening soon” there and that the store will offer “over 1,000 authentic fragrances at discounted prices.” The new Perfumania shop will be neighbored by the Build-A-Bear Workshop and a Miniso store. The fragrance shop is going into a space that formerly was home to Francesca’s, which closed earlier this year . Perfumania touts on its website that it is one of the nation’s largest fragrance retailers, with more than 100 stores nationwide. It carries men’s and women’s fragrances, from companies such as Dolce & Gabana, Lancome, Paris Hilton, Giorgio Armani and many others. The company has been in a growth pattern, with industry publications noting earlier this year it planned to add 43 new locations throughout 2026 and 2027.
