Lafayette school projects could get $22 million under board plan
The Lafayette Parish School Board will consider reallocating about $22 million for more than a dozen district projects Thursday, along with a financing proposal to move construction of the new Ovey Comeaux Workforce Innovation Academy forward. The measures, scheduled for consideration at the board’s regular meeting, would support campus investments across Lafayette Parish and advance a workforce training facility intended to expand students’ access to hands-on career preparation. For the Comeaux project, the board will consider authorizing $14 million from the Lafayette Parish School System’s Economic Stabilization Fund. The district would repay the fund when it issues bonds at a later date. That arrangement would allow the project to proceed while LPSS waits for more favorable borrowing conditions, according to the district. “We have said from the beginning that our schools have to compete, and that means investing both in the opportunities we provide students and the places where they learn,” Superintendent Francis Touchet Jr. said in a statement. “These recommendations allow us to keep important projects moving while continuing to make financially responsible decisions for the district.” Comeaux workforce academy could move closer to construction Board members also will consider approving the recommended Construction Manager at Risk, or CMAR,

Opelousas football survives homecoming thriller against LCA
Opelousas football was determined to put on a show in Week 5’s homecoming matchup against Lafayette Christian Academy on Friday, Oct. 2, and the Tigers did just that. Both squads entered with 3-1 records, leading to a close game down to the final seconds. In the end, the Tigers' want for a homecoming victory was just a little bit more than the Knights’ desire to spoil it, as Opelousas escaped with a 28-26 victory. “We escaped man, the homecoming, it really was a distraction,” Opelousas coach Harry Coleman said. “The kids wasn’t really locked in all week but like I said previously, I would take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day.” Here’s how Opelousas escaped with a victory to move it to 4-1 overall just before district play kicks off. Opelousas’ trust in its quarterback The clear difference maker for the Tigers all game long was senior quarterback Collin Rideau. Listed at 6-foot, Rideau was willing to do whatever he had to.
