Roaches, rodent droppings, fuzz. Worst Midlands restaurant inspections: October

The South Carolina Department of Agriculture has wrapped up its restaurant inspections for Oct., and the dirtiest kitchens in the Midlands have been spotted. Inspectors look at kitchen conditions, and this month, they found roaches, rodent droppings, fuzzy organic growth and employee misconduct. The following restaurants had restaurant inspections in Oct. and received C grades, which is the lowest achievable score. This is a sample of the restaurants with the lowest scores and is not a complete list. You can find the complete list here : Captain D’s at 818 Hwy 1 S in Kershaw County Captain D’s in Kershaw County had a restaurant inspection on Oct. 5 and received a score of 78. The inspector noticed that an employee was handling raw fish and other proteins and didn’t wash their hands before switching tasks. Dishes were stored with food and grime still on them. Raw fish was being stored at a temperature that could risk bacterial growth. Fly and roach activity was noticeable during the inspection. The inspector also saw dead flies and roaches throughout the kitchen. There were damaged gaskets in the walk-in cooler and cabinets had black growth inside them. There was a heavy buildup of grease

Popular burger chain wants to turn an Arby's into its next Charlotte restaurant

Midwestern burger chain Culver’s is eyeing Mint Hill for its next restaurant. The fast-casual spot wants to bring its famous Butter Burgers and frozen custard to 6200 Wilson Grove Road, near the Lawyers Square Shopping Center, according to a service site plan filed with the city. The site is currently home to a closed Arby’s. Plans call for the latter to be converted into a new Culver’s restaurant “with associated drive-thru, parking and utilities.” CharlotteFive reached out to Culver’s for more information on Monday, Nov. 2, and was awaiting a response. The chain has several existing Charlotte-area locations, including spots in Belmont, Indian Trail, Kannapolis, Mooresville, University City and the Olde Whitehall area. Culver’s also has an outpost in Fort Mill, and the chain plans to open another in nearby Rock Hill , according to its website. Launched in 1984, the Wisconsin-born brand serves made-to-order Butter Burgers alongside crinkle-cut fries, crispy chicken, fish and frozen custard flavors that rotate daily. A new spot for pizza and calzones has made its debut along a busy street in West Columbia. New Brooklyn Pizza has debuted at 134 State St. in West Columbia. That’s near the State Street Pub and the West Point Coin Shop, less than a half-mile west of the Gervais Street bridge. The new pizzeria noted on Instagram that it is still in a soft opening phase, with hours this week being noon to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 4 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The pizza menu at New Brooklyn includes a number of artisanal, New York-style pies. That includes, among others, the cup & char, which comes with Battistoni cup & char pepperoni, aged mozzarella and a robust red sauce. Also among the offerings is the Pig & Fig, which comes with Four Oaks country ham, thinly sliced prosciutto, fresh fig jam and ricotta salata. New Brooklyn also has a selection of calzones , including the Meatlover. That comes with pepperoni, soppressata, chicken, mozzarella and a house red sauce. During a recent stop, this reporter got the grilled cheese calzone, which comes stuffed with mozzarella, provolone and whipped ricotta.
