On This Day in 1930, a Tennessee Governor’s Re-Election Triggered a Banking Panic and Inspired a Country Music Classic

On this day (November 4) in 1930, Henry H. Horton was elected to his third term as the Governor of Tennessee. Not long after he won his re-election, banks owned by his political allies began to collapse. Horton had deposited most of the state’s money into those banks. As a result, the state of Tennessee lost more than $6 million, which is more than $123 million in today’s currency. The resulting financial disaster inspired Uncle Dave Macon to write “The Wreck of the Tennessee Gravy Train.” \

Hendersonville, Yalobusha County: The Vanished Town That Almost Became the County Seat

Appalachian Community Histories – Hendersonville, Yalobusha County: The Vanished Town That Almost Became the County Seat. During the early 1830s, Hendersonville was a bustling frontier trading center where merchants established businesses, physicians attended to the sick, blacksmiths worked their trades, and local officials helped organize a newly created county. For a brief period, the settlement even stood at the center of a political struggle that would determine where Yalobusha County conducted its government.
