Troy aquatic center to be closed summer 2027 due to infrastructure issues

Troy will not open its aquatic center for the upcoming summer season because of infrastructure issues, and city officials are evaluating its long-term future, officials said on Nov. 5. In a lengthy post on Facebook, the city said the Troy Family Aquatic Center on Civic Center Drive, just north of Troy's municipal complex, will be closed in summer 2027 "due to significant infrastructure failures that require extensive repairs." The repairs will disrupt the city's ability to operate the facility, the post reads. The aquatic center in summer 2026 experienced "unsustainable" water loss due to multiple failures throughout the facility's aging underground systems. Minimum repairs to this system are estimated at $1 million, according to city officials. “Because repairs can only be done in the summer, the pool will be closed for the 2027 season," said City Manager Frank Nastasi in the post on Facebook. "We will keep evaluating its long-term future, and we hope community partnerships can be part of the solution.” The Troy Family Aquatic Center opened in 1992 and marked its 30th anniversary in 2022. Gesher Human Services , one of the largest human service agencies in metro Detroit, is offering Homebuyer Education Classes twice a month through the end of January. While the four-hour classes typically cost $50 for a family, this season the fees are being waived, to remove one extra barrier to families getting into a home that they can own. Such classes are a requirement for the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), Down Payment Assistance Program which provides $7,500-10,000 loans to families with limited incomes hoping to purchase a home. A report by Patch in October suggested the Michigan housing market is showing signs of shifting toward buyers, giving buyers more negotiating power than sellers. Experts believe this is because there are fewer buyers than normal because some have been priced out of the market, and others are worried because of economic uncertainty. STERLING HEIGHTS — Voters had mixed feelings about a pair of local ballot proposals Tuesday, overwhelmingly passing one and narrowly rejecting another. Unofficial results showed strong support for a measure that will require future vacancies on the Sterling Heights City Council to be decided in a public vote rather than solely by appointment if there are more than two years remaining on the term.
