Henry County freight study plan taking shape

HENRY COUNTY — Nearly two months following the Board of Commissioners’ unanimous decision to conduct a freight study, Henry County’s plan is taking shape. Erin Thoresen, the project manager of Gresham Smith, updated commissioners with the plan’s progress at Tuesday’s meeting. Thoresen said the kickoff meeting was Monday, Oct. 26 and it is an 18-month study ending approximately in February 2028. The county’s freight cluster — an area with a high concentration of warehouses, distribution centers and trucking facilities — stretches from McDonough to Locust Grove. The primary corridor follows Interstate 75, with an emphasis on Ga. Highways 20, 81, 42 and 155, McDonough Parkway and Industrial Boulevard. The county will conduct the study in partnership with the Atlanta Regional Commission as well as the cities of McDonough and Locust Grove. The study’s primary objectives will include addressing truck parking needs, reducing traffic congestion and improving worker access to freight industry jobs. “Fifteen years ago, we didn’t see the same usage of fulfillment centers as we see now where goods are shipped into a distribution center, and then they use smaller vehicles to distribute those out to the retailers in the local area,” Thoresen said. “Those are new and evolving

Rockdale voters approve FLOST for property tax relief

CONYERS — Rockdale County voters have approved a new 1% sales tax intended to reduce county and city property taxes, according to unofficial election results. The Floating Local Option Sales Tax, or FLOST, received about 64% of the vote in Tuesday’s election. Unofficial results Wednesday showed 21,084 voters supporting the measure and 11,942 voting against it. Rockdale voters approve a 1% FLOST for property tax relief The vote authorizes Rockdale County to collect an additional 1% sales and use tax for five years, with the revenue required to be used exclusively to reduce property taxes imposed by Rockdale County and the city of Conyers. The new tax will raise the combined sales tax rate in Rockdale County from 7% to 8%. County officials estimated ahead of the election that FLOST could generate approximately $26 million countywide in 2027. Under an agreement between Rockdale County and Conyers, approximately 81.5%, or about $21 million, would go to the county, while roughly 18.4%, or $4.8 million, would go to the city. Unlike a SPLOST, which funds designated capital projects, FLOST revenue must fund property tax relief.
