Route 64 safety project calls for 2 roundabouts, plus road-ditch realignments

With its deep ditch and dangerous intersections, Ohio 64 between Bowling Green and Haskins has long been an accident waiting to happen. Motorists who drive the 4.5 miles of Route 64 come within a foot of the steep ditch drop off. Belleville Ditch, estimated anywhere from 8 to 12 feet deep, leaves little space for drivers to recover if they go off the roadway. And the close proximity of the ditch to the road has resulted in erosion of the pavement, leading to frequent repairs.

Slope repair closes lane on southbound I-475 near U.S. 24

Repair of a slipping slope along southbound I-475/U.S. 23 near the U.S. 24 interchange closed the right lane and shoulder after Thursday’s morning rush hour, and more work may occur there in the future. Kelsie Hoagland, a spokesman at the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Bowling Green district office, said state officials observed the formation of a dip in the roadway and guardrail just south of Monclova Road at least several weeks ago and have been monitoring it ever since. Kokosing Construction Co., which widened and rebuilt the freeway in that area several years ago, sent a crew out Thursday morning to investigate and make an initial repair, Ms. Hoagland said. The intent was to make at least a temporary repair before winter sets in, then evaluate what additional work might be needed in the spring, she said. The exit to U.S. 24 remained open, but traffic using it needed to slow down to make a relatively sharp turn after the work site. Check back for updates.

ODOT mechanics inspect snowplows ahead of winter weather

Mechanics from the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Bowling Green garage helped Lucas County workers prepare for the winter season Tuesday. Jacob Rupp, district garage manager for ODOT, supervised the Bowling Green mechanics, watching them detach and turn around snow plows and check engines to ensure drivers cruise on safe roads during winter. Six mechanics from the Bowling Green garage offered a second pair of eyes in evaluating the readiness of equipment at the Lucas County garage in Maumee. “It’s always vital that we go through the whole fleet and check everything over to make sure for its roadworthiness,” Mr. Rupp said. “There’s a lot of things that we have to conform to as far as ODOT regulations. The same as any big truck going down the road, we look every year to make sure the truck is not illegal to go down the road.” The mechanics checked brakes, drive lines, salting systems, tires, salt containers, and plow blades, checking their lists as they spread out to examine each truck, Mr. Rupp said. Road Warrior: ODOT seeks comments about State Rt. 64 project

HASKINS, Ohio — A pending State Rt. 64 reconstruction project south of Haskins that includes two new roundabouts will be the subject of an open-house meeting Wednesday in Bowling Green. The Ohio Department of Transportation plans to realign and rebuild 4½ miles of Route 64, including some modifications to the Haskins Road Ditch. The project is intended to move the road away from the edge of Belleville Ditch, which now poses a hazard for roadway or guardrail failures, and thus reduce maintenance costs, ODOT said. Roundabouts are planned at Route 64’s intersections with State Rt. 582 (Middleton Pike), just south of Haskins, and Bishop Road. The session will run from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bowling Green Community Center, 1245 W. Newton Rd. A feasibility study for the project will be released during the meeting and project officials will be present to discuss it, but no formal presentation will be given. Region awarded $2.2M to support transportation safety plans

Four northwest Ohio counties were awarded federal grants totaling $2.2 million to plan and implement several transportation safety efforts. Congressman Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) announced Friday that Lucas, Ottawa, Wood, and Sandusky counties received grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation to institute a real-time railroad crossing information system integrated with 911 dispatch, conduct road safety audits, measure crash data, and assess agricultural vehicle conflicts. “This award improves more than just infrastructure — it protects lives and provides for thoughtful study and analysis of transportation issues that affect our entire region,” Ms. Kaptur said. “By working together with federal investments, our local communities are better equipped to deliver actionable change and identify future opportunities for growth.” The federal Safe Streets and Roads for All program funds critical projects across the nation that prevent roadway fatalities and serious injuries.
