Report: Grinnell Regional created $120 million impact on local economy

GRINNELL — A recent Iowa Hospital Association report says UnityPoint Health-Grinnell Regional Medical Center made a significant economic impact in Poweshiek County and surrounding communities. The report underscored the vital health care services the hospital provides throughout a six-county rural region. The IHA reported that GRMC had a $120 million impact on Iowa’s economy and supported approximately 664 jobs in 2025, generating about $55 million in wages. Statewide, Iowa hospitals account for nearly 12% of all employee wages. “Our mission is to improve the health and well-being of the people and communities we serve,” says David-Paul Cavazos, president of GRMC. “The impact of a local hospital extends far beyond the care provided within our walls. Every day, we create jobs, invest in our community and ensure that residents can access high-quality care close to home. When people choose their local hospital, they help strengthen the health and vitality of our entire region while supporting essential services that keep our rural communities strong.” In addition to its economic impact, GRMC provided over 5,000 encounters through community service programs, contributing approximately $4 million in community benefit. These figures reflect the hospital’s continued commitment to improving health outcomes across its service area. “These

Cedar Valley Medical Specialists Closed

Cedar Valley Medical Specialists, including the location in Waverly in the mall between Hy-Vee and Miller True Value, have ceased all operations, according to KWWL. The medical group has experienced money issues that led to them being forced to stop operations. They borrowed more than $15 million from Farmers State Bank over several years but have defaulted on those loans. Lawyers for CVMS had sought to unfreeze financial assets and bank accounts currently blocked by Farmers State Bank but that was denied by a judge. Employees were supposed to be paid on Friday but that allegedly did not happen and it is unclear if they will be paid in the future. In the meantime they are eligible to apply for unemployment insurance compensation from Iowa Workforce Development. Employees also no longer have health insurance coverage through the company. The individual doctors and clinics may continue to operate but will need to do so on their own, independently.

Regional Medical Center Celebrates First Surgery in New Addition

Regional Medical Center (RMC) has officially welcomed its very first surgical patient into its brand new surgery addition. Edgewood resident, Diane Murphy, became the inaugural patient after requiring an emergency surgery. As a retired nurse with prior experience in surgical care in another Iowa community, Murphy brought a unique perspective to the milestone. “It feels pretty good, especially since it was unplanned,” shared Diane. “I worked in surgery at one time, too, so knowing that this was an emergency kind of makes a good christening of the surgical suite.”
