KITTITAS CO., Wash. -- Kittitas County Search and Rescue volunteers saved a Kirkland woman and her 13-year-old Shiba Inu after losing the the trail down from a hike.

Kittitas County Sheriff's Office responded to the call for help around 8 p.m. Sunday, May 12 in the French Cabin Mountain area, just north of Easton.

According to KCSO, the woman lost the trail on her way down due to two to three feet of packed snow covering the path.

KCSO said Kittitas County Search and Rescue was called just after 10 p.m. and ground teams were able to talk to the woman on the phone using multiple radio relays. Search and rescue crews were not able to locate her until 3:20 a.m.

According to officials, once search and rescue were able to find the woman, teams helped the woman and dog make their way down the trail. Crews, the woman and the dog were not able to reach the trailhead until just after 9:30 a.m. Monday morning.

KCSR crews said the woman and dog were able to drive home unharmed and safely.

KCSO wanted to remind people that it is not uncommon for people to overestimate the impact of a few warm spring days in backcountry conditions. Remember spring and summer come slowly to the mountains and be prepared for fast-changing situations when hiking.
