    Amis Mill 10K quite the family affair

    ROGERSVILLE — The eighth edition of the Amis Mill 10K road race was held Saturday, May 4, at the historic, scenic venue of the Amis Mill Eatery.

    The USATF-certified course along Bear Hollow Road started and finished at the Amis Mill Eatery overlooking the Big Creek Falls at Amis Dam. The race was part of the Skelton Law Racing Series presented by Rogersville Attorney Mark Skelton and was included in the State of Franklin Track Club King & Queen Competition. Runners and volunteers enjoyed a breakfast buffet by the Amis Mill Eatery at the post-race celebration.

    The entire race turned out to be quite the family affair.

    The top overall male was 21-year-old Parker Cowden of Kingsport in a time of 41:01. Parker’s mother, Angie Cowden, age 51, finished 20th overall in a time of 59:00, and Parker’s father, Brad Cowden, age 52, finished 24th overall in a time of 59:52.

    The top overall female was 20-year-old Eowyn Warner of Abingdon, Virginia, in a time of 47.04. Finishing second overall was Eowyn’s brother, Caleb Warner, age 16, in a time of 42:35. Eowyn’s father, Nathaniel Warner, age 50, finished seventh overall and was the male Grandmasters champion in a time of 48:43.

    The male Masters champion, who finished third overall, was 54-year-old William Harper of Kingsport in a time of 42:55. The female Masters champion was 49-year-old Amy Bradley of Johnson City in a time of 52:49. The female Grandmasters champion was 62-year-old Debbie Vitenza of Bristol in a time of 56:21. Doug Strickland of Gray, 62, was the male Senior Grandmasters champion in a time of 51:01, while 62-year-old Teri Berkel of Bristol, Virginia, took female Senior Grandmasters honors in a time of 1:00:18.

    Awards were presented to all finishers in five-year age group categories, with all participants receiving commemorative performance shirts. Runners ranged in age from 16-year-old Caleb Warner to 79-year-old Tom Deaderick of Morristown.

    Gold sponsors for the 2024 Amis Mill 10K included the Amis Mill Eatery, Rural Health Services Consortium Inc., R. Douglas Strickland M.D. of Gastroenterology Associates in Kingsport, and the Law Office of Mark A. Skelton in Rogersville. Other supporters included Seaver’s Bakery of Kingsport, Texas Roadhouse of Kingsport, Food City of Church Hill, the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Department, The Rogersville Review, and the State of Franklin Track Club, plus the many community volunteers who help make the race a success.

    Other upcoming events for the 2024 Skelton Law Racing Series include the Wolf Run 7-mile trail race on July 23, the 15-mile Bays Mountain Trail Race on Sept. 7, and the Surgoinsville Half Marathon road race on Oct. 19.
