Small Wisconsin school district to dissolve after voters reject referendum

(The Center Square) – The Hustisford School District, in eastern Wisconsin, is going away. Wisconsin’s School District Boundary Appeal Board on voted to dissolve the district. It is the first time since 1990 board agreed to close a school district. Hustisford has just 238 students in the entire district and has been losing students for years. The school district asked voters for a $4 million referendum in April, but it failed. Quickly after the election, Hustisford Schools then began the process of shutting down. The vote was the final step. Wisconsin's state superintendent blamed a lack of money, and how the entire state of Wisconsin pays for schools for the shutdown. "The Hustisford School District is a casualty of decades of an antiquated, broken school funding formula that has failed to keep pace with the costs of educating our children," State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly said in a statement. But Hustisford Schools were spending about the state's average per student. Budget numbers show Hustisford's budget was more than $6 million per year and show that the school spends about $22,000 per student. That's more than Wisconsin's state average of nearly $18,000 per student. Hustisford is in rural Dodge County, and

Unbeaten Amherst embracing home field advantage for Level 3 playoff showdown

STEVENS POINT – Whether it's the first week of the season or a Level 3 playoff matchup, Amherst football isn't changing its approach. With the Falcons first opportunity to clinch into the state-qualifying game since 2019 when they battled Stratford at Stiehm Stadium. “I think the biggest thing is we've never — I've never in my 17 years — prepared for any opponent differently,” Amherst coach Mark Lusic said. “I don't care if it's the number one team in the state or if it's Little Sisters of the Poor. We prepare week in and week out the same way. “The kids understand that that's the same message every week, so I think it helps us tremendously. The kids know who they're playing. You don't need to say anything. It's playoff time. It's Level 3. They know the situation, but we're still going to prepare and talk the same way we always talk.” Dons joy pushes team back to state: Columbus Catholic volleyball's joy leads program to second state run Lusic is not shying away from their excitement to compete in front of their home crowd this time around. Winneconne School Board Clerk submits responses to recall complaint

WINNECONNE, Wis–Winneconne School Board Clerk Kari Flagg defends her decision to invalidate recall petitions against two fellow board members. In filings with the state Elections Commission, Flagg claims that the forms filed by organizers of the recalls against board President Kati Calewarts and Vice President Dean Ackmann were not filled out completely, and therefore a signature-gathering period never legally started.

Seymour schools face budget cuts after vote fails

Seymour Schools face potential budget cuts after a $15 million operational referendum failed Nov. 3. The district's unofficial results showed 2,354 votes in favor of the referendum, about 46% of voters, and 2,812 opposed, about 54%. The referendum would have replaced one from 2024, which allowed the district to increase its taxing authority by $5 million a year for three years. The funding would have gone to maintaining programs, buildings and services for students, as well as keeping down class sizes and paying staff a competitive wage, according to district communications. District administrator Kellie Bohn attributed the referendum failure to rising living costs. "It's a tough fiscal time ... all over the state," Bohn said. "I'm confident that we have a lot of support for our schools in our communities, even if it didn't translate into 'yes' votes." "The challenge of all the inflationary expenses just makes people hesitant on approving a referendum, even though our mill rate was going to drop and our levy was going to stabilize," she added. According to data from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction , Seymour's tax rate was $7.97 per $1,000 of equalized property value in the 2025-26 school year, down from
