Seattle's Jaelynn Scott set to be Washington's first trans lawmaker
Seattle voters are poised to send the first openly transgender person to Washington's Legislature, with Jaelynn Scott holding 87% of the vote as of Thursday. The big picture: The milestone comes in the same election in which Washington voters approved new restrictions on trans girls competing in girls' school sports. Zoom in: Scott, the executive director of the Black trans advocacy organization the Lavender Rights Project, is on track to win the Position 2 seat in Washington's 37th Legislative District. The state House chief clerk and state Senate secretary told Axios they were unaware of any previous Washington legislators who publicly identified as transgender. The 37th district consists mostly of southeast Seattle but also includes a small part of Renton and some unincorporated areas, including Skyway. What they're saying: Scott acknowledged the historic nature of her victory in an election night news release. But she said her campaign was primarily about "families fighting to stay in the neighborhoods they built," along with "housing, health care and schools." "Being first is a responsibility, not a trophy," Scott said. "To every trans kid in Washington who has been told there's no place for them: there is. It's in the State House." Her

Silverdale man accused of attempted kidnapping near Ridgetop school
A Ridgetop Middle School student was allegedly accosted by a 20-year-old man who lives in a nearby apartment complex on Monday, before an online search led to the man's arrest for attempted kidnapping and assault. According to a probable cause statement for the man's arrest filed in Kitsap County Superior Court on Nov. 5, the man, who was identified as an active duty member of the Marine Corps, was initially seen standing on the sidewalk near a large apartment complex around Ambercrest Way and Ridgetop Drive. The 12-year-old victim had exited a bus from nearby Ridgetop Middle School, the student told her mother and later Kitsap County Sheriff's Deputies, when she saw the man was holding a phone and appeared to be recording her. The suspect then asked the student for directions to a nearby Shell station, located just a few blocks north. The man then followed the child, according to the student's statement in a Kitsap County Sheriff's Office incident report, grabbed her backpack with one hand and placed his other hand on her back, and said "You're coming with me." The girl then punched at the man away and ran, but stopped momentarily to take a photo of
