A new spot for pizza and calzones has made its debut along a busy street in West Columbia. New Brooklyn Pizza has debuted at 134 State St. in West Columbia. That’s near the State Street Pub and the West Point Coin Shop, less than a half-mile west of the Gervais Street bridge. The new pizzeria noted on Instagram that it is still in a soft opening phase, with hours this week being noon to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 4 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The pizza menu at New Brooklyn includes a number of artisanal, New York-style pies. That includes, among others, the cup & char, which comes with Battistoni cup & char pepperoni, aged mozzarella and a robust red sauce. Also among the offerings is the Pig & Fig, which comes with Four Oaks country ham, thinly sliced prosciutto, fresh fig jam and ricotta salata. New Brooklyn also has a selection of calzones , including the Meatlover. That comes with pepperoni, soppressata, chicken, mozzarella and a house red sauce. During a recent stop, this reporter got the grilled cheese calzone, which comes stuffed with mozzarella, provolone and whipped ricotta.
