Longtime local restaurant owners have opened a new authentic Mexican restaurant, Mendoza's Mexican Grill, off Columbia Road in Grovetown. Erica Mendoza and her husband Gustavo opened their latest venture on Friday at 508 Oxbow Drive, across from Bartram Trail neighborhood and golf club. A new spot for pizza and calzones has made its debut along a busy street in West Columbia. New Brooklyn Pizza has debuted at 134 State St. in West Columbia. That’s near the State Street Pub and the West Point Coin Shop, less than a half-mile west of the Gervais Street bridge. The new pizzeria noted on Instagram that it is still in a soft opening phase, with hours this week being noon to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 4 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The pizza menu at New Brooklyn includes a number of artisanal, New York-style pies. That includes, among others, the cup & char, which comes with Battistoni cup & char pepperoni, aged mozzarella and a robust red sauce. Also among the offerings is the Pig & Fig, which comes with Four Oaks country ham, thinly sliced prosciutto, fresh fig jam and ricotta salata. New Brooklyn also has a selection of calzones , including the Meatlover. That comes with pepperoni, soppressata, chicken, mozzarella and a house red sauce. After months of public feedback, the city of Columbia this week unveiled sweeping plans for remaking a broad swath of downtown riverfront into the city’s newest park. Plans for gardens, walkways, bike paths, community spaces and a boat launch are all slated for a future park along the banks of the Congaree River between the Gervais Street bridge and the University of South Carolina’s baseball park. The city and park designers showcased the plans for the first time at a public forum Monday at the Senate’s End event venue close to the site of the long-planned public development. They also frankly addressed the challenges to getting the project off the ground in such a challenging location. “It’s a tricky situation,” because much of the 100-acre site, long undeveloped at the edge of Columbia’s Vista district, sits in an area that is frequently flooded when storms swell the size of the Congaree, said Sarah Astheimer with the New York-based landscape architecture firm Field Operations, which designed plans for the future park. “It will be a green sponge,” Astheimer said. “Previous plans called for more development and buildings, and that would not be a smart thing to do.” Instead, the designers plan
